Number Seventeen has just turned two – so a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our youngest shop family member.
17 The Strand, Dawlish became available shortly after Christmas of 2015. Sean and I were aware of the shops availability on a shoe buying trip in February. Whilst wondering the buying halls we drifted through isles of ladies clothing and the idea started to form that maybe this would be a good idea for Dawlish.
That night we had dinner with friends who own a shoe shop in Cornwall and fully expected them to talk us out of the idea. On the contrary they thought the idea was brilliant, the theory being that all High Streets need to offer a varied amount of quality shops in order to make the High Street worth visiting and The Strand, Dawlish was no exception.
The next day we re-entered the trade show with new enthusiasm to become clothing buyers. I have always loved clothing and style so I relished this new exciting adventure, but Sean who is definitely more at ease coaching his under 13’s rugby team, was more than a little bored by lunchtime – fairly typical man!!!!
On our return to Dawlish we set about producing what we feel is a bright, airy shop that could show off the collections that we had invested in and we finally opened the doors in May 2015.
Two years down the line, I have to confess to quite a few mistakes, but I have also gathered much needed knowledge and feel that Number Seventeen has grown into a boutique that has a large loyal following, with ladies travelling from as far afield as Taunton and Plymouth who travel to buy such brands as Mistral, Nomads, Captain Corsaire and Brakeburn and has adopted a smart, casual approach to dressing. We can complete outfits with David Jones handbags and Katie Loxton accessories. Along with our staff, who all approach a friendly and helpful attitude to customer care make the shopping experience in Number Seventeen a pleasant experience.
Without doubt the most challenging of our shops, probably because I spend hours and hours agonising over putting the collections together but without doubt the most rewarding as the chance to explore my inner artist and go to town on the visual merchandising gives me an enormous amount of pleasure.
